Sina Weibo (新浪微博) is China's largest microblogging platform — often called China's Twitter. With over 584 million monthly active users, Weibo is where trends are born in China. If you want to market your business in China, connect with Chinese celebrities, or reach Chinese consumers, Weibo is essential. The good news: foreigners can sign up from most countries.
Weibo is a microblogging platform where users post text, images and videos. It has hashtag topics, trending lists, verified accounts, follower systems and advertising tools — very similar to Twitter. However, Weibo has some unique Chinese features like its "Hot Search" (热搜) system where topics trend nationally, and its deep integration with Chinese celebrity culture.
Weibo is available in most countries including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Brazil and many more. India can use Weibo but requires a VPN due to Indian government restrictions on Chinese social media.
Open your browser and go to weibo.com. The page may appear in Chinese. Find the language option at the bottom right corner and switch to English. You can also go directly to the English version at weibo.com/signup/signup.php?lang=en-us
Choose your country from the dropdown list. Enter your phone number with the country code. Note that some countries may not appear in the English version — try the Chinese app version in that case.
Weibo will send an SMS code to your phone. Common issues include "too many SMS requests" or "SMS code not received" — try different methods if this happens (app vs webpage).
Add your display name, profile photo, and basic information. A complete profile looks more trustworthy and helps you grow followers faster.
Create a strong login password. You will use this to log in from other devices.
Download the Weibo International app from Google Play or App Store. Open it and select Register. The app version sometimes works when the webpage registration fails. Try both methods if you encounter issues.
